189 : Socrates says, in Plato's Republic, that it wasn't his task to show the ideal is possible. Indeed, even ideals are meaningful, just as a painting of an impossible perfection can be meaningful (I thought of Islamic arabesques, here). And yet we hear his critique of the opportunities of women, this first feminist critique of philosophy, and imagine how impossible it would have seemed for thousands of years in most parts of the world. Now, it isn't -thanks to the work and sacrifice of so many, especially women. So, environmentalists, should we be put off by the charge our ideals are impossible?
1 - 9 - 0 : Children imitate well the things their adults do. More so -they are consistent and precise in discovering where principles they've learned should be applied, but are not. It doesn't take more than a generation, then, to bring ourselves to a mentality of sustainability.
Earth thought 191 of 365: Environmental education -best done by example. Not experience alone, not the lone nature experience. Example -a person *relating* to nature in a way that honors and preserves it. Someone benevolent -of pure and good will. For it is our relationship that is at issue, that is skewed.
