Earth thought 196 of 365: This is apparently a cycle we might see with climate change - more heat in the winter, more cool in the summer. I mean, the climate we will try to make in our homes and at work. And the result? More energy spent. Here we see the vicious cycle. If we do not find alternative energy to the kinds creating green house gases, then our attempt to ward off the effects of climate change will only exacerbate them.
Earth thought 197 of 365: I wonder, as might you, about this. The citizen expressing her or his concern for the environment is pressured to appeal to present interests if she or he wishes to get results. Our politics and media see barely beyond the present day. How, then, can she or he advocate for the unrecognized, the useless, or for the far future? I am wondering if there are interests that touch on us from each of these remote spots. Not present interests, deep interests.
Earth thought 198 of 365: Calm space in the world. We need it - like a clearing in the forest, or a still patch on the lake, gently rocking.
Earth thought 199 of 365 : Cool after heat -after hot, sticky, nerve-fraying heat. I come back, again and again, to the way we are so intimately connected in our sensibilities to the wider order, to climate. Disturbing, to find our autonomy so unhinged, by what? By temperature. Character worth its name, of course, resists it. But humanity acknowledges it.
Earth thought 200 of 365 : What is an environmental citizen? Clearly, the fisherwoman taking on British Petroleum. She wants to know how her environment will be affected, how its plenitude can be protected. She wants to know this -the air and water aren't abstract to her. They don't come through vents and show up in bottles. She has her life in them, like a handyman has his life in nails and screws that do not always work. Things can break down. You have to work at them; the body of our house isn't an idea.
