That is, we need to change our sense of what to expect of human life, of what is desirable, and of what is virtuous. This is what Allen Thompson and I call "the humanist view of adaptation" -and it is a far cry from what the President is considering, for whom adaptation is a matter of -futilely- throwing technology and money at a world whose values do not need -he thinks- to change!
